The Splendid Table Podcast/NPR show features a weekly segment with the incomparable Jane and Michael Stern, authors of several Roadfood books, the excellent roadfood.com website, and the Road Food column in Gourmet Magazine. Anyone who follows the Stern’s knows that they really enjoy Milwaukee, especially places like Mr. Perkins’, Real Chili, Benji’s, Gilles Frozen Custard, Jake’s Deli, Solly’s, Speed Queen and a number of other Milwaukee institutions. Well you can add McBob’s to the list of places they love. Here is a summary of what they said:
Milwaukee is the home of the great Friday night fish fry. You’ll find them everywhere, but one of the best is at McBob’s.
If fish isn’t your thing you’re still in luck because McBob’s also makes one of the best corned beef sandwiches in the city and maybe the whole country. The meat is hand-sliced and chunky the way it should be and there’s just enough fat to make it juicy and falling-apart tender. Pair the sandwich with the wonderful potato pancake and the must-have libation of a bottle of beer and a shot of whiskey. Heaven!
Some of the best corned beef in the country, here in Milwaukee? Let me tell you that is an impressive feat. Milwaukeeans already know about the corned beef at McBobs, which has garnered praise from the Shepherd Express and Milwaukee Magazine, now food lovers around the country know too. Congrats to McBobs.

Well deserved too. I used to consult at St. Josephs and had friends who lived nearby so I got to eat there frequently. I haven’t been there in a while but when Brian was tending the corn beef that guy was a sight to behold. I’ll take McBob’s over Rochester Deli any day.
